Curriculum information
Class 1
Terms 5 & 6 2024
Our class topic this term is Near and Far – comparing the UK with Kenya.
Here are some of the things we will be doing and learning about this term:
English | Fiction – We’ll be using our Pie Corbett techniques to tell stories to each other, focusing on Owl Babies by Martin Waddell, to begin with and then Peace At Last by Jill Murphy. We will write our own innovated stories using our ideas from our focus texts.
Non-Fiction – Recounts. Letters We will write letters to the children starting school in September to welcome them to our school and to tell them all about class 1.
Spelling homework (year 1) will be uploaded to Google classroom on a Thursday. Please use the ‘look, say, cover, write, check’ technique to help your child to learn them. Please return the spelling homework the following Tuesday or before. Please remember to read and enjoy books with your child as much as possible, it makes such a difference in so many areas of their learning. |
Maths
Mathematics – Number and Numerical Patterns
|
Maths homework is uploaded to Google classroom each Thursday (Year 1)
Multiplication and Division Counting in 2’s, counting in 5’s, counting in 10’s, making arrays, grouping and sharing. Fractions Recognise, find, and name a ½ and a ¼ as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity. Geometry Describe position and direction. Number – Place Value Counting to 100, comparing numbers, partitioning, comparing and ordering numbers. Measurement Recognising coins, recognising notes, before and after, time to the hour, time to the half hour, writing time, comparing time.
Reception Building numbers beyond 10 Adding more Taking away Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) above 5. Automatically recall number bonds for numbers 0-5. Have a deep understanding of number 10, including the composition of each number. Automatically recall – without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids – number bonds up to 5. Recall some number bonds to 10, including doubling facts. Become familiar with two-digit numbers and start to notice patterns within them. Counting patterns beyond 10. Doubling Sharing and grouping Even and odd numbers Compose and decompose shapes so that children recognise a shape can have other shapes within it, just as numbers can. Select, rotate, and manipulate shapes in order to develop spatial reasoning skills. |
Computing
(Year 1)
Understanding the World |
Programming and computer control using Discover Coding
We will first learn what algorithms are and then understand how they work by using the computer and the website Discover Coding to give instructions to make objects on the screen move when the program starts. We will also combine start events and click events in code to make a simple game.
Reception We will program Beebot to move in different directions and use the Beebot app on the iPads to make it move on the screen. |
Science
Understanding the World – The Natural World |
Living Things and their Habitats
We will decide whether something is living, dead or non-living and explain the differences between living and non-living things. We will also describe how a habitat provides for the basic needs of things living there and describe a range of different habitats.
Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants. Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class. Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter. Forest School for Reception continues Wednesdays with Emma Levan. If the weather has been wet, please bring wellies/old clothes on a Wednesday.

Geography
Understanding the World – People, Places and Communities |
Near and Far– comparisons with Kenya.
This term we will be looking at location, human and physical geography, direction/location, fieldwork, and map work by learning about a small area of the United Kingdom and Kenya. We will begin our unit of work by naming and locating the seven continents and the countries that make up the United Kingdom.
Reception Recognise some similarities and differences between life in this county and life in other countries. |
Art
(Term 5)
Expressive Arts and Design – Creating with Materials |
Painting/colour
We will look at the work of Picasso and the use of colour to explore the primary colours and how they can be used to make secondary colours. We will then make colours lighter or darker by adding white or black to them and begin to mix and match colours to artefacts, images, or objects.
Reception Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools, and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Share their creations, explaining the process they have used. Make use of props and materials when role playing characters in narratives and stories.

DT
(Term 6)
Expressive Arts and Design – Creating with Materials |
Materials including textiles.
In term 6 we will learn to demonstrate a range of joining techniques and cut materials safely using tools provided. We will demonstrate a range of cutting and shaping techniques, use simple pop-ups and understand how simple 3-D textile products are made, using a template to create two identical shapes. We will understand and use the term fabric, textile and material correctly when describing and designing products, understand how to join fabrics using different techniques and discuss and identify what gives a product a good quality finish.
Reception Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Share their creations, explaining the process they have used.
