Class 2
Our class topic this term is … Changes in Living Memory
Here are some of the things we will be doing and learning about this term:
English |
Our fiction writing this term will be writing ‘list poems’. We will read some poems structured in the style of simple lists. We will then write our own poems, inspired by a ‘My Garden’ poem.
We will be learning all about non-chronological reports, and build towards writing our own. All year 1 and 2 pupils will also have a trip to the Cheltenham Literature festival, where we will focus on ‘The Lion Inside’ by Rachel Bright. This will then inspire a mini-unit of work back at school. |
Maths
|
We will start by looking at some core skills (counting, using number lines, dienes etc.). We will then progress to place value (numbers within 20), then addition and subtraction (numbers within 20). |
Computing
|
Through online stories, activities and games, we will be exploring and learning how to stay safe when working online. We will develop understanding of sharing digital content online, what personal information is and the need to keep it private. We will explore who to tell if concerned about content or contact. The class will then work together to identify rules to create an acceptable use policy for the class when using devices. |
Science |
We will be exploring how the shapes of solid objects made of everyday materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. We will explain how the shapes themselves, as well as the materials, are changed by these processes. We will identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper, cardboard for particular uses. We will be working scientifically throughout this unit to ask questions, and plan investigations to find out their answers. We will begin to collect and record data and make and describe observations. This topic will continue after half term. |
History |
We are going to approach this unit of work through the lens of ‘How have shops changed in the last 100 years?’. We will begin by comparing the shopping experience in three different time periods, looking at stories, artefacts and a range of sources. We will then focus on a particular time period, again looking at shopping, but in more depth than before. We will utilise our local community to add personal experiences to this study. |
Art |
In the first half of this term, we will explore and discuss the work of a famous sculptor, and create our own pieces inspired by them. We will experiment with a range of materials to decide which is best to use to make our sculptures. We will also look at what tools and techniques we need to use and their safety. |
DT | Our unit on construction and mechanics will be taught in the second autumn term. |
PE |
|
Music
|
This term, class 2 will be receiving lessons in how to play the glockenspiel from specialist music teacher Lee Butler. |
PSHE |
First, we will revisit our school values, reminding ourselves what they are, along with the animals which symbolise them, to help us as we learn and play together.
Then we will move on to learning about the 5 ways of wellbeing (Connect, Be Active, Give, Keep Learning, and Take Notice), thinking about what they mean to us, and how they can help to keep our minds healthy and happy.
We will be following a series of lessons to learn about the four zones of regulation. We will learn the names of many different emotions, and learn to categorise them into green, blue, yellow or red zones. We will learn the importance of self-regulation when in each zone, as well as finding out about some tools we can use to help with this.
For the rest of the term, we will be learning about how to help make our classroom a positive place to be, as well as how be a good friend. We will also learn about the different types of bullying, how to identify them and some strategies for dealing with bullying. This unit will continue after half term. |
RE |
Thinking about why we celebrate Harvest and participating in the whole school celebration. |
